My Favorite (unique) Locations for Your Senior Photos
The three questions I get asked the most from parents when they are booking their child's Senior Sessions is...
1. When are Senior Photos normally scheduled?
2. Do you have packages, what do they include, and how much are they?
3. Where do we go to take the photos?
The three questions I hear from the Seniors is...
1. What should I wear, and how many outfit changes do I get?
2. Where do we go to take the photos, and can we go to more than one place?
3. Will you edit out my _________?(ex: tan lines, acne, scar, etc)
As you can see the most common question from both is, “Where do we go?”
I’m always in for finding and trying new locations and getting creative with some spots. I'm well known as that person who will pull off on the side of the road because a strip of field in the median caught my eye, or pull into an alley because I spotted some cool grafitti, an old building, etc.
But, I also have a few favorite spots and aesthetics too.
Let's start with outside|urban...
Some of my favorite spots for senior photos in urban locations are found in alleyways of downtown areas! This can include warehouses, rundown buildings, peeling paint, fire escape ladders, graffiti walls, grungy doors and flowering vines that have made for some of the most unique spots! Look for chainlink fencing, old buildings, and urban flowers. Surprisingly, there are so many flowering trees and bushes and downtown areas, but you just have to start looking for them!
Urban artwork makes for an incredible natural backdrop for photos, too. This may not be a fit for all sessions but when it does fit the end result is... WOW!
Old doors have to be one of the coolest things, and so easy to find with a walk around any downtown area. I'm obsessed with old doors, and used with the right posing they make such cool images!
One spot that you can not miss downtown is the top of the parking garage(s)! This is an absolute must, you'll get an absolute killer sunset image! Head up there a little early and get the bright sunlight first for two totally different looks for your Senior portfolio!
This can be downtown locally or I'm always up for a road trip! I've captured some of my favorite shots in the downtown spots of the entire Tri-state area, DC, and Pittsburgh!
How about gardens, parks, fields, nature, and the country?
There are some beautiful locations locally, and if you're willing to travel just a bit within the tri-state (or beyond.. which I always am) you can truly ROCK a great session! There's the tried and true beauts... Hager House, Renfrew, fields, barns, and streams, Devil's Backbone, and a dozen or more other pretty locations.
Those are wonderful locations and have beautiful aesthetics. Now, give a few of my favorite places a thought or two when we're planning your session. They may take a bit more effort but trust me when I tell you that they are totally worth it... you'll stand out from the crowd, and you'll have images with that IT factor!
- The Lavender Farm at Deep Creek
- Glenview Mansion in Rockville
- Brookside Gardens Conservatory
- McCrillis Botanical Gardens
- A Carnival, Fair, or Festival
- Greenhouses
A few of my favorite indoor locations...
If the outdoors just isn't your thing or you don't want to deal with the challenges of scheduling around the weather, don't worry... I have some favorite indoor spots too! These are favorites because of the colors, the vibe, the energy, and the way they show up on your final images! I know you'll love 'em too!
Don't shy away from giving them a try, believe me, you won't regret any one of 'em...
- Museums, Historical Buildings, Art Galleries
- Diners!!
- Theaters, Drive-ins
- Bookstores, Libraries
- Cafes, Coffee Shops
