Frequently Asked Questions
Harper Grace + Co. Studios Family + Children
- What should we wear for the session?
-
Choosing the right outfits can significantly impact the look and feel of your photos. It's advisable to coordinate your clothing without being overly matchy. Think of complementary colors and avoid busy patterns. Soft, neutral tones often work best, creating a timeless look. Feel free to bring accessories and an extra outfit for variety.
Also, I provide a styling and tip guide to all of my clients.
- When is the best time to schedule a session?
-
Outdoor sessions are best scheduled during the "golden hours" — early morning or late afternoon, when the light is soft and flattering. For indoor sessions, natural light from large windows is ideal. Booking your session a few weeks in advance ensures you get your preferred time slot and allows time for any necessary preparations.
- How long does a photo session last?
-
Typically, family and children photo sessions last between one to two hours. This duration allows for a relaxed atmosphere, multiple locations or setups, and outfit changes. It also gives children time to warm up to the camera and feel comfortable.
- What if my child is shy or uncooperative?
-
It's completely normal for children to feel shy or act out during a photo session. I'm very experienced in working with children, and so are my assistants, I will use various techniques to engage and relax them. Bringing a favorite toy or playing their favorite music can help. Patience and a positive attitude from parents also go a long way.
- Can we include pets in our family photos?
-
Absolutely! Pets are part of the family too. Including them can add a fun and dynamic element to your photos. Just let me know in advance so I can prepare and suggest suitable locations or setups.
- How should we prepare for the session?
-
Preparation is key to a successful photo session. Make sure everyone is well-rested and fed. Bring snacks and water, especially for younger children. Discuss any specific ideas or themes you have in mind with me beforehand. It’s also helpful to arrive a little early to allow time for everyone to settle in.
- What kind of locations work best for family photos?
-
Choosing a location that holds personal significance or offers a beautiful backdrop can enhance your photos. Parks, beaches, urban settings, and your own home are popular choices. Consider locations that offer a variety of settings to provide diversity in your photos.
- Can we bring props or special items?
-
Yes, props can add a personal touch and make your photos more unique. Think of items that represent your family's interests or milestones, such as books, sports equipment, or heirlooms. Just ensure that the props do not overshadow the main focus – your family.
- What if the weather is bad on the day of our outdoor session?
-
Weather can be unpredictable, but don't worry. I keep an eye on forecasts and try to have contingency plans for rescheduling or moving the session indoors. If it appears weather will be an issue we will communicate to find the best solution.
- Can we request specific poses or shots?
-
Certainly! I will bring my expertise and creative vision, and I welcome yours! Your input, sharing your preferences and must-have shots, will ensure that you get the images you envision. We will discuss these ideas during your consultation or before the session begins.
- What if we need to cancel or reschedule?
-
Life can be unpredictable, and sometimes, cancellations or rescheduling are necessary. Whenever possible, I prefer at least 24 hours' notice for cancellations and rescheduling. Remember that retainers are non-refundable; however, they can be moved to your new session date.
- Are there any additional tips for a successful session?

- Be yourselves. Authentic moments are more meaningful and memorable.
- Trust your photographer. Their expertise will help guide you to create beautiful images.
